Immigrant Activists Work to Push Arpaio Out of Office

September 13th, 2012    Posted in Immigration News

Arizona lawmaker Joe Arpaio is getting ready for his 5th re-election campaign, but this year he is being met with opposition from immigrant activist groups.

An impending ruling on a lawsuit that alleges his department violated the civil rights of Hispanics may very well determine Arpaio’s fate in office.  A second lawsuit filed by the Justice Department is also in progress.

Arpaio doesn’t seem to realize the severity of the situation. He hasn’t even mentioned in TV ad campaigns a single word about immigration reform.

“Issues in campaigns are like flowers: They bloom, go away and then they bloom again,” said GOP lobbyist Stan Barnes said. “The bloom is off illegal immigration.”

However, Arpaio is still the favorite to win the November election. In an interview, he acted like all was fine and that he was adored by followers.

“I get hundreds of people coming up to me and thanking me,” said the Maricopa County sheriff.

However, Arpaio did admit that the political race has proven to be closer than in years past.

“It might be a little bigger challenge because I have people coming after me — the Justice Department,” he said.

Yet, immigrant activists are not going down without a fight and are striving to prove that Arpaio is up to no good.

Illegal immigration is an issue that hits very close to home. The feud between the federal government and individual states over who has the power to impose immigration laws has come to a head and its innocent people who are the victims.

If you need help to resolve immigration-related problems, including green card applications or appeals,  family reunification or deportation,  turn to an immigration lawyer immediately for assistance. Jeb Bush to Release Book on Immigration Reform

September 12th, 2012    Posted in Immigration News

As illegal immigration continues to be a hot subject of debate for the upcoming Presidential Election, one former politician is also addressing the issue in a new book – Jeb Bush.

The former Florida Governor and son of former president George Bush has already begun the project and landed a deal with Threshold Editions, a conservative imprint of Simon & Schuster, for “Immigration Wars: Forging An American Solution.”

According to Threshold, the book is scheduled for release next spring and will be co-authored by conservative attorney and activist Clint Bolick.

“Drawing upon history and American ideals, Jeb Bush and Clint Bolick outline a courageous and comprehensive strategy to bridge the partisan divide and set our nation’s immigration policy on a just and rational course,” said Threshold in a statement. “The book will present a comprehensive solution based on two core principles: Immigration is vital to America’s future, fueling its growth, vibrancy and creativity; yet any true and enduring solution must adhere to the rule of the law.”

Unlike some of his more conservative party mates, Bush has been urging his fellow Republicans to take a slightly more moderate approach to immigration reform.

“Don’t just talk about Hispanics and say immediately we must have controlled borders. Change the tone would be the first thing. Second, on immigration, I think we need to have a broader approach,” he said earlier this summer, calling out to other Republicans.

“We’ve got to have a better tone going forward over the long haul for sure,” the former Florida governor said. “You can’t ask people to join your cause and then send a signal that ‘you’re really not wanted.’ It just doesn’t work.”

Hopefully other politicians take this same stance on immigration reform. In the meantime, immigrants are encouraged to seek help with an immigration lawyer to ensure their rights are protected.

Fate of NC Immigrant Could Sway Presidential Election

June 8th, 2012    Posted in Immigration News

NORTH CAROLINA – Orfilia Sagastume-Reyes, a Thomasville resident facing possible deportation to Guatemala, wishes he could have asked Vice President Joe Biden for help when he was in Winston-Salem on Wednesday.

“I would ask that he would live up to the promises (the Obama administration) made. They said that they would do immigration reform. I would ask it not only for me, but also for millions of people like me, who are not criminals — and that they have a little compassion for us, that they put themselves in our shoes,” said Reyes in Spanish.

Sagastume-Reyes, who has been in the U.S. for 22 years, reported to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Charlotte on Thursday to discuss her deportation case. She entered the country legally with a visa, but it has since expired. Sagastume-Reyes is afraid to return to Guatemala, where threats had been made over her father’s involvement in government.

Sagastume-Reyes attempted to gain legal status, but her attempts at seeking asylum have failed. Her case represents a major concern of voters over the presidential race and highlights the importance of the Hispanic vote, especially in North Carolina.

While Hispanics voted 67 percent in favor of Barack Obama, according to exit polls, his administration’s record number of deportations has left many Hispanics concerned.

Given that Obama only won North Carolina in 2008 by a thin margin, and that the number over Hispanic voters has increased by 35 percent to nearly 92,000 since then, Obama and Romney must take a strong stance on immigration in order to gain the support of Hispanic voters.

If you need help with filing for legal status or any other immigration matter, turn to a North Carolina immigration lawyer for help. Your immigration attorney in North Carolina will see to it your case ends favorably.

Mississippi Gov. Shows Support for New Immigration Measure

03 02 2012 Immigration Attorney News Blog Mississippi Gov. Shows Support for New Immigration MeasureJACKSON, Mississippi — Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant admitted on Wednesday that he supports a new immigration-enforcement bill and does not believe it will lead to Hispanics being the targets of racial profiling.

“This law applies to everyone, not just to people who are south of us or Hispanic by descent. But look at the crime and violence that we now see in Mexico,” said Bryant. “The border — south of these United States lies a country that seems to be in chaos.”

Bryant disagrees with those that think the U.S. “should ignore individuals who come here from that very violent atmosphere.”

“Follow the law. That’s all we ask. Simply get in line with those who want to become Americans, abide by the restrictions that we have and you will be welcome with open arms,” he added.

House Bill 488, awaits consideration in the House Education Committee. It is similar to the other immigration bills enacted across the nation, allowing police offers to check someone’s legal status when “a reasonable suspicion exists.”

Allegedly, the bill would not allow officials to use race or color when making the decision, but then what other method can possibly be used to single out immigrants aside from racial profiling?

The bill is being met with controversy, as it also requires schools to check the immigration status of students.

Labor Members to Fight for Removal of Alabama Immigration Law

November 17th, 2011    Posted in Immigration News

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – National labor leaders visited Birmingham on Wednesday and did not like what they saw.

The leaders were bombarded by stories of immigrant plights and pleads for help in fighting the state’s new immigration law. Various Hispanics spoke up about their struggles and especially about how they have lost their jobs, and after listening to what they had to say, Fred Redmond, the international vice president for human affairs with the United Steelworkers, said he and his fellow members of the AFL-CIO sponsored delegation would carry the message back to union groups throughout the country.

“Our commitment is to go back to our organization and tell your story,” said Redmond to the immigrant groups. “Your struggle is our struggle. You are not alone. We must come up with some sort of strategy to help with this situation.”

On Wednesday, Al Henley, the newly elected president of the Alabama AFL-CIO, argued that the national labor movement shares some blame for the situation in Alabama because of how they usually viewed Alabama – and the South in general – as a lost cause when it comes to reformation. “We are powerless in the Alabama Legislature,” said Henley. “It’s a shame it got this way, but what do you expect when you ignore the South?”
Henley went as far as to call the Alabama legislation “hate-filled.”

However, he said it the legislature provides a way for labor unions to come together and fight for immigrant rights.
