Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has been elected for a sixth term, despite being in the middle of several law suits and accusations that he is a propagator of racial profiling by pushing the enforcement of SB 1070. Now, on election night, he is offering a do-over with the Latino community.
“I’d like to get closer to the Latino community, if that could ever happen to try to explain what we do and get better relationships,” said Arpaio. Although, he warned: “I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing.”
Arpaio’s opponents included Democrat Paul Penzone and independent Mike Stauffer. Both accused the self-proclaimed “Toughest Sheriff in America” of caring more about media attention than actual law enforcement.
“Our sheriff needs to be transparent, he needs to treat everyone with dignity and respect,” said Penzone after being defeated. “People in this community are going to be watching. They’re going to be holding him accountable.”
Immigrant rights organizations have challenged Arpaio’s win, claiming 400,000 provisional ballots have not been counted.
“There are almost half a million people whose votes haven’t been counted,” said Tomas Robles, deputy field director for Promise Arizona in Action.

Vice President Joe Biden Claims Obama Administration is Working on Immigration Reform

Vice President Joe Biden isn’t taking any chances when it comes to trying to secure the presidential vote for Obama. On Tuesday, he said that he and the president have been working hard on immigration reform matters that will help undocumented immigrants obtain legal status.
“Right now, you’ve got the president and I and a lot of Democrats out there breaking our neck trying to get a real immigration law that takes millions of people out of the shadows, making sure that ‘Dreamers’ don’t have to go back in many cases to countries they’ve never been,” he said in an interview with the Enrique Santos radio show.
The vice president urged Latino voters listening in to vote for the Obama administration in order to send a message to Republicans that immigration reform is needed.
“If the Latino vote comes out, the Hispanic vote comes out and changes the election, all of a sudden those guys who paid no attention to you, no attention to the Hispanic community, no attention to the Latino community. All of a sudden they’re going to say, ‘Oh my Lord I guess we better get in line with the president. I guess we better start moving in the direction of paying attention to this incredible, this incredible pool of talent we have out there. So this is a chance to gain influence that’s almost disproportionate to the impact that you may have directly in the election,” said Biden.

Obama Brings Immigration Issue to the Forefront

COLORADO – During a campaign stop at the Colorado State Fairgrounds in Pueblo, President Barack Obama had no qualms about slamming his competition, Mitt Romney, over his immigration policies.
“Romney believes in self-deportation,” said Obama, adding that he also supports Arizona’s controversial anti-illegal immigration law, SB 1070.
Obama, who recently launched the deferred action program so young undocumented immigrants may seek legal status and a work permit, preached to the crowd, saying that “being a part of the American family…is the right thing to do.”
In attempts to reach out to the Latino community, the Romney campaign has launched an ad in Spanish in Colorado, but is focusing on other issues, such as health care and repealing “Obamacare,” should he be elected president.

States Moving Away From Illegal Immigration Laws

A recent study released Monday by the National Conference of State Legislators shows that state crackdowns on illegal immigration are becoming a thing of the past.
Between having to deal with their own budgets and struggling to create laws, state legislatures have passed fewer immigration laws this year.
“Legislators found that state budget gaps and redistricting maps took priority, consuming much of the legislative schedule,” read the report. “Perhaps more significant, state lawmakers cited pending litigation on states’ authority to enforce immigration laws as further reason to postpone action.”
According to the study, 41 states passed 114 bills and 92 resolutions regarding immigration in the first six months of 2012, a 20 percent drop compared with the first six months of 2011, according to Reuters.
As heated as the immigration debate got, with Arizona leading the way with SB 1070, recent court judgments may have deterred other states from taking on similar ventures.
