ImmigrationLawyersNow.org 300x225 ICE Launches Help Hotline for Detained Immigrants               In an effort to improve immigration policies, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has launched a hotline for detainees who “may be U.S. citizens or victims of a crime.”

According to ICE officials, the agency wants to “ensure that individuals being held by state or local law enforcement on immigration detainers are properly notified about their potential removal from the country and are made aware of their rights.”

The hotline, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week can be reached at (855) 448-690. Both English and Spanish speaking personnel are available. In addition, translation services will be available in a number of different languages from 7 a.m. until midnight (Eastern Time) seven days a week.

The initiative is a result of several U.S. citizens being held in immigration detention centers under the Secure Communities program, a program that was intended to detect illegal immigrants that have been arrested for various crimes.

Just a few months ago, a similar hotline was launched in Chicago, called the Deportation Family Support Hotline. Created by the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR), the hotline was run by volunteers and helped to expose scams directed at immigrants with deportation cases under review.

Although this program seems to benefit immigrants, the Obama administration said it aims to improve the “immigration enforcement process and prioritize resources to focus on threats to public safety, repeat immigration law violators, recent border entrants, and immigration fugitives.”
