Posted in Georgia’s Immigration Enforcement Review Board received a complaint regarding a violation of the state’s new immigration law.
The complaint, filed by D.A. King, an advocate for enforcement of U.S. immigration and employment laws, claims that over 1,000 city and county government agencies are not complying with a key provision of HB 87.
King states employers with two or more employees must file annual reports asserting that they are using the federal E-Verify system to check the legal status of new hires. However, he found that many employers were not filing the reports.
Many employers claim they were not familiar with the law, and therefore, did not file the reports. Others said they were too busy with their workload or other business-related matters. However, if the companies fail to file the reports, they may risk losing state funding and may be sanctioned with fines up to $5,000.
Ben Vinson, chairman of the Immigration Enforcement Review Board, said that despite the violations, it would be difficult to take action against the agencies because so many committed the violation. He did say that he would contact auditors regarding the complaint.
