Posted in Plans to build an immigration detention center in a rural area of Broward County sparked protests from residents and immigration activists. The new detention center will be one of the nation’s largest facilities.
Residents of the Florida County feel that a detention center will drive down property values and pose a security threat. It would also drive traffic into the rural county. Some residents see the detention center as a way to attract new economic opportunities to the area.
Immigration activists were vocal about the fact that building a new detention facility indicates and expansion in deportations instead of immigration reform. The record number of people detained for illegal immigration has reached unprecedented levels. Immigration lawyers are representing record numbers of undocumented people, in spite of the feds assurance that only serious criminal offenders are the target of deportation proceedings.
Immigration detention centers also house individuals who are seeking asylum. Many of these individuals are held until they are slated to appear in immigration court. Asylum is given to thousands of people who fear for their personal safety. For immigration lawyers, asylum cases are challenging and very time consuming.
Though immigration detention centers do house criminals the majority of these individuals have committed no crimes or minor ones. A new detention center in Broward County could alleviate overpopulation in other Florida facilities. Immigration attorneys can be enlisted by individuals to obtain visas or citizenship and avoid any deportation proceedings or detention altogether.

Interesting, I feel that it would definitally create jobs in this poor economy.
In terms of its impact on immigrants I feel it makes the illegal immigrant look like a criminal when most are extremely hard working honest individuals.
I believe we should do as the indigenous population of this nation did to our forefathers and WELCOME them.
this country was built majority by immigrants…and WHY SHOULD WE DETAIN AND DEPORT IMMIGRANTS WHO HAVE BEEN HERE FOR OVER YEARS , WORK FOR A LIVING, GOTTEN IN MINOR TROUBLE (I.E, POSS OF CANNIBIS LESS THAN 20 GRAMS)
OR WHERE THE STATE HAS NO INFO AND NEVER CONVICTED THE PERSON…WHAT WE DONT KNOW IS THAT OUR COURT SYSTEM SUCKS AND IS BLIND….THESE PROSECUTORS ARE NOT INFORMING IMMIGRANTS OF THE CONSEQUENCES THAT THEY CAN FACE WITH THEIR STATUS….JUST SO THEY CAN HAVE A CONVICTION…UNDER THEIR BELT…MY FIANCE IS BEING RAILROADED IN GLADES COUNTY DETENTION CTR…..CONVERSATIONS THAT HIM AND I HAVE THEY WANT TO USE AGAINST HIM…HE IS IN THEIR SINCE APRIL …I HAVE TRIED NUMEROUS TIMES TRYING TO SEEK HELP FROM PRO BONO ATTORNEYS FOR IMMIGRATION DEFENSE…NONE WHO WANT TO HELP…
I AM A US CITIZEN…AND WHAT ‘S HAPPENING TO THE IMMIGRANTS ….THEY ARE NOT BEING TREATED FAIRLY…ONLY KEPT IN THEIR FOR TOO LONG PERIOD OF TIMES…MONTHS AND YEARS….DESTROYING FAMILIES AND FRIENDS OF THE IMMIGRANTS , CAUSING EXTREME HARDSHIPS…MR OBAMA I NEED YOUR HELP
